If the Maldives is a 'unique democracy', then President Gayoom is making sure that no talk of human rights or democracy dispels his fantasy. A recent crackdown on pro-democracy activists came a few months after the President promised to introduce Constitutional reforms. Peaceful demonstrators were beaten and arrested, and a member of Parliament and a member of the recently set up human Rights Commission were detained. Past experience has shown that those waiting for President Gayoom to deliver on his promises for reform should not hold their breath. The international community must look beyond the President's insincere promises, and apply pressure to ensure the implementation of the genuine democratic reform that the people of the Maldives are now demanding.
